Students will color a map of Zambia from National Geographic Map Maker Kit online and will assemble the map as a class. Students will denote the capital, 5 majors cities, draw 3 rivers and draw mountains if any.
Upper Elementary Activity
Standard: CC.5.W.3.d Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. Social Studies (ISBE, 2011) Objective: Students will write a letter to a Pen Pal.
Students will participate in a Pen Pal project with students from Lusaka, Zambia. Students will be paired randomly and will correspond over the course of Second Semester. Writing one letter every 2-3 weeks. Each letter will need to be one page in length. Student will then write a one page Biography about their Pen Pal to share with the class.
Fine Arts Activity
Standard:26.B.2d Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing. Visual Arts (ISBE, 2011) Objective:Students will create and design a unique Coat of Arms for their family.
Students will create a Coat of Arms for their family name. A Coat of Arms is a unique design on a shield used to cover or protect Armour and to identify the wearer. Students need to use at least 3 colors on their Coat of Arms (Wikipedia, 2011). The shield should have at least two different types of contour lines that were taught and practiced in art class. Students will be provided with a 8 x 11 poster board with a template. Students then will be allowed to use any art materials to create their shield: markers, crayons, colored pencils, glitter, newspaper, beads, feathers etc.
